What is a Domain Name?

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is actually website name. It refers to a virtual Internet address where any Internet user with a web browser can access the website.

Domain names are used for finding, identifying and utilising networks and computers on the Internet. For this purpose, the computers are essentially assigned a series of numbers called as IP addresses. Alike the well-known telephone numbers, 194.225.72.32 is an example for such an IP address, where each block of numbers denotes country, city, service provider and organisation. Considering a very common and daily use of these sets of numbers, it is almost impossible and impracticable to remember them for any average human being. As a consequence, using domain names with any combination of letters and numbers has been cleverly introduced instead of using IP addresses. Since the introduction of the internet, this has been one of the strategic improvements making it possible to find a website by just typing in a name rather than an IP address. In another saying, it is much more practical to type “atakdomain.com” in the web browser compared to the IP address that the website uses as 194.225.72.32. We remember domain names easy than IP addresses.

Any domain name includes a name component and an extension component. “atakdomain.com” is an example for it, where “atakdomain” is the name that is very easy to remember and use while “com” is the extension.

Every domain name is unique and registered before use, meaning that any two websites cannot have the same domain name. Typically, the price of a domain name ranges between $5-25 and usually renewed every year.

All of the domain names are globally managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The ICANN organizes the domain names and their usage by means of a central database that can be used to direct any domain name to a dedicated hosting computer.
